How much is my comic collection worth?

Most comic collections are worth between $300 and $3,000, and 80 to 90 percent of that usually sits in fewer than ten books. A long box of common 1990s comics is worth $30 to $80. A single Silver Age first appearance can be worth more than everything else combined. The fastest way to find out is to photograph the spines and ask somebody who buys them.

Typical values by what you have

What you haveRealistic rangeWhy
1–3 long boxes of 1990s books, no keys$50–$250Enormous print runs; supply far exceeds demand
Same, with 2–3 modern keys$250–$900Keys like New Mutants 98 or Spawn 1 priced individually
Bronze Age run (1970–85), mixed condition$500–$3,000Depends which first appearances are present
Silver Age Marvel (1961–70), any condition$1,000–$20,000+Even low-grade keys sell; high grade multiplies
Golden Age (pre-1956)Worth a conversationIndividual books can reach five or six figures

What actually drives the number

  1. First appearances. The first issue a character appears in, not the first issue of a series. Amazing Spider-Man 300 (first Venom) is worth far more than issue 299.
  2. Condition. Graded 1 to 10. The same book at 9.4 versus 6.0 can differ tenfold. Humidity, sun-fading, and spine wear are the usual culprits here.
  3. Era. Pre-1970 books were printed in smaller numbers and thrown out more often, so survivors are scarce.
  4. Demand right now. A movie or show announcement can double a book overnight and let it fade a year later.

Three things that don't add value

  • Bagging and boarding. It preserves value; it doesn't create it.
  • "Collector's edition" and foil covers from the 1990s.
  • A book simply being old. Age without scarcity or a key character is just age.

Common questions

What's a long box of 1990s comics worth?

A long box of about 250 common 1990s comics is usually worth $30 to $80 to a buyer. The exceptions are key first appearances such as New Mutants 98, Spawn 1, and Batman Adventures 12, which are priced individually.

What's the most valuable comic in a typical collection?

In the collections I buy in Florida, it's most often Incredible Hulk 181 (first Wolverine), Giant-Size X-Men 1, Amazing Spider-Man 129 (first Punisher), or an early Amazing Spider-Man issue. Each is worth several hundred to several thousand dollars depending on grade.

How can I check comic values myself?

Search eBay and filter to sold listings, or use GoCollect or CovrPrice. Compare only books in the same grade as yours. Printed guides like Overstreet lag the market and tend to run high.
