How to tell if your old comics are valuable
Check five things: the cover price (10 or 12 cents means 1950s–60s and worth a look), the publisher (Marvel and DC carry most value), whether the issue is a first appearance, the condition, and whether it's a reprint. If a book passes the first three, photograph it and ask somebody.
The five-minute check
- Cover price. 10¢ = pre-1962. 12¢ = 1962–69. 15¢–25¢ = 1969–76. Anything under 50¢ deserves attention.
- Publisher. Marvel and DC dominate value. Early Image, Dark Horse, and Gold Key have pockets. Charlton, Harvey, and Archie rarely do.
- First appearances. Search "[title] [issue number] first appearance." If a major character debuts there, it's a key.
- Condition. Flat, glossy, no spine ticks, no water stains, no writing. Damage on a key book still leaves value; on a common book it removes it.
- Reprint check. Look for "reprint," "facsimile," "true believers," or a modern barcode on an old-looking cover.

Common questions
Are comics from the 1990s valuable?
Mostly no. The 1990s had enormous print runs. The exceptions are first appearances (Deadpool in New Mutants 98, Harley Quinn in Batman Adventures 12, Spawn 1) and a few low-print late-90s books.
Is a comic valuable just because it's old?
No. A 1950s romance or western comic can be worth a few dollars. Age matters only alongside a popular character, a first appearance, or genuine scarcity.
